Metin Paksoy - Biography

Metin Paksoy was born in 1964 in Ankara, Turkey. As the son of a diplomat, he spent his childhood traveling the world (Switzerland, Belgium, the Soviet Union). He grew up playing the guitar and listening to a wide variety of music, including progressive rock (Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, King Crimson,…), fusion (Whether Report, Oregon,…), electronic music (Tangerine Dream, Wendy Carlos,…) and classical music (Bach, Beethoven, Mahler, Shostakovich,…). He received classical piano education while living in Moscow in his early teens.

In the following years, he concentrated on various forms of improvisational music, fully immersed himself in jazz music and started playing the alto saxophone (studying in particular the music of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman). During the 80s, in addition to his formal education as a mechanical engineer, he started playing the soprano, then the tenor saxophones and formed several bands featuring standard jazz repertoire, as well as his own compositions. In the early 90s, he joined several professional jazz bands and played extensively in numerous jazz clubs and events in Turkey.

From the mid-90s onwards, he moved to Belgium and worked and studied with several prominent Belgian musicians (Peter Vandendriessche, Emmanuelle Somer, Rudy Haemers, Jan Mues, Guy Raiff,...). Over the last decade, he featured in numerous concerts and recordings, playing jazz (with Onder Focan, Cem Aksel, Mahmut Yalay, Tom Sweeney, Gilles Robitaille, Dany Delepiere, Eric Ivens,…) and electronic music (with Can Atilla). In addition to his activities as a musician, he became a regular contributor to the Turkish magazine Jazz, and the classical music magazine Andante. He is currently involved in a wide range musical activities to include jazz (with the band Kindred Spirits), free improvisation (with GMT), wind ensemble (with Rudy Haemers), as well as electronic music.
